EFI Central European Regional Office and the Observatory for European Forests


EFICENT is the regional office of the EUROPEAN FOREST INSTITUTE (EFI) , an international organization established by European states . It is composed of two offices that were both founded in 2009:

EFI Central European Regional Office (EFICENT) is located in Freiburg, Germany, at the heart of the Black Forest. The office is working in close collaboration with the Forest Research Institute of Baden-Wϋrttemberg (FVA) and is supported by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Rural Affairs and Consumer Protection and the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL)

The Observatory for European Forests (OEF) is based in Nancy, France. The Observatory has a pan-European perspective and provides valuable information and data delivery on forests. The French Ministère de l'Agriculture de l'Agroalimentaire et de la Forêt, the National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA), AgroParisTech – ENGREF, the University of Lorraine, ECOFOR, Grand Nancy, and La Region Lorraine actively support the office. 

An Advisory Group is supporting the work of EFICENT.

Tree hive bee keeping – reviving a traditional practice in forests


Jointly with the Forest Enterprise Ebrach in Bavaria, Germany the European Forest Institute (EFI) organized a multi-day course in the Steigerwald in Franconia on the traditional method of tree hive beekeeping.  Between 23rd and 26th of October participants from several European countries, were introduced to the ancient craftsmanship of tree hive beekeeping (German: Zeidlerei).
